Rafael Ortega, masquerading as Eduardo, is a supporting character in Life After Death introduced in Issue 13. He is a murderer formerly imprisoned at Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Oregon, sentenced to life in prison by Gregory Norton after murdering his wife, daughter, and wife's lover. He breaks free from the facility seven years later along with six other inmates in the wake of the apocalypse. After spending several weeks on the road, the inmates are encountered by Robert Michaels' group of survivors, and taken in under the pretense of being survivors who escaped from Portland.

When Gregory confronts Rafael about his identity and crimes, Rafael attacks him with a knife. Gregory manages to fend him off, on account of Rafael's physically weak state after his time in prison, and inadvertently stabs him in the gut with the knife, and Rafael slowly and agonizingly bleeds to death.
